What sets Last Epoch apart from other ARPGs is its two-realm structure: the 'Cycle' and 'Legacy' realms. Per Eleventh Hour Games' official description, new content ships periodically as Cycles; when a Cycle starts, you begin in a fresh economy with a cycle-only character to explore new mechanics and a new item pool, and when it ends your character does not disappear but transfers to the Legacy realm. This flow is not just a 'start and end' — it moves through announcement, launch, mid-cycle, end, and transition. Knowing it in advance lets you start efficiently the moment a Cycle launches. This guide does not replace Eleventh Hour Games' official patch notes; it organizes one Cycle's timeline, fact-first, from the perspective of a player tracking the schedule. Because specific dates change with each announcement, this guide uses relative timing. For reference, the five Cycles ARPG Seasons has tracked since 2024 are a small sample, but their median cycle is about 178 days — noticeably longer than the other ARPGs on this list (many end dates are algorithmic estimates, so read these as approximate medians). The most recently completed Cycle, Season 3 'Beneath Ancient Skies,' ran especially long at about 217 days.

Cycle vs Legacy — The Two Realms

The starting point for understanding Last Epoch is the distinction between the 'Cycle realm' and the 'Legacy realm.' The Cycle realm is the active stage where everyone starts together in a freshly reset economy, while the Legacy realm is the permanent space where characters and items from past Cycles gather. When a Cycle ends, cycle characters do not disappear — they transfer to Legacy, so the two realms are not rivals but a flow from 'active' to 'permanent.'

Which one you play on comes down to preference. If you want a fair fresh start, the newest mechanics, and the energy of a community progressing together, the Cycle realm fits; if you prefer to accumulate at your own pace without reset pressure, Legacy fits. The table below summarizes the differences.

Stage 1: The Cycle Announcement and Development Preview

As a new Cycle approaches, the developer previews its direction through the roadmap thread on the official forum, development blogs, and live streams. During this announcement window, the concept of the new Cycle mechanic, the direction of class and skill balance changes, and expansions to items and the crafting system tend to be revealed in sequence. Players who seriously prepare use this period to watch community reactions and gauge which builds will be strong early on.

Keep in mind, though, that information at the announcement stage is 'directional reference' that can still be adjusted. Unlike the Diablo family's PTR, there is no standing separate test server, so most confirmed details emerge in the detailed patch notes released just before the Cycle begins. Treat the announcement as a way to grasp the big picture, and hold your final build decision until the patch notes drop.

Stage 2: Cycle Launch — The First Few Days and Mid-Cycle Play

When a Cycle starts, you create a cycle-only character separate from your Legacy characters. Since every player starts fresh together, the first few days make leveling speed and early build efficiency the heart of the competition. The Cycle's unique new mechanic activates at this point, and new item sets and league-only content open up. What you can prepare beforehand is clear: decide your class and starter build ahead of time, learn how the new mechanic works, and plan your day-one leveling route. All of that begins with knowing the exact Cycle start time.

By mid-Cycle, most players are repeating endgame content to push their gear and using the deep crafting system to complete target items. Balance hotfixes may land during this period, and cycle-limited events may open. Last Epoch's distinctive deep crafting is the core of goal-directed farming from mid-Cycle onward, and community-vetted builds get organized, making it easier for latecomers to find direction.

Stage 3: Cycle End and the Legacy Transition

When a Cycle ends, your cycle-only character and items do not disappear — they transfer to the Legacy realm. The Legacy realm is a permanent space where characters from every past Cycle gather, suited to players who want a relaxed pace without the tension of a reset economy. If there are any cycle-limited rewards or ranking-related elements, though, it is best to wrap them up before the end, so knowing the end date in advance and tidying up remaining goals pays off.

The next Cycle usually starts close to when the previous one ends, possibly with a short gap in between. That gap is a good time to plan your next build and review the announced changes.

Preparing for a Cycle Launch — A Worked Scenario and Checklist

Here is one scenario showing how to put the stage table above to use, and how it compresses into the checklist below. Suppose a player wants to run the next Cycle properly from the start. When the announcement and dev preview appear a few weeks before launch, they skim the new mechanic's concept and balance direction and shortlist a couple of classes they are interested in. Since information at this stage can still change, they hold their final decision.

When the detailed patch notes drop just before launch, they lock in a starter build and plan their day-one leveling route and the early crafting goals to chase. They log in at the exact launch (D-Day), push through the early game as planned, and mid-Cycle they repeat endgame while completing target items through crafting. As the end approaches, they wrap up cycle-limited elements, confirm their character transfers to Legacy, and plan their next build during the gap.

The starting point of this rhythm is knowing exactly when the Cycle starts and ends. Unlike the Diablo family, Last Epoch has no standing test server, so confirmed details cluster right before launch — which makes pinning down the start time in advance especially important. You can check Last Epoch's Cycle start and end times on the Last Epoch page's live countdown here.
