ARPG Seasonal vs Permanent Characters — Which Should You Pick?
How do seasonal (league) characters differ from permanent (Standard) ones? This guide compares the trade-offs — with a table — so you can pick the playstyle that fits you.

See our editorial policy & teamIn most seasonal ARPGs, players face a two-way choice when creating a character: the 'seasonal (league) character' that resets each cycle, and the 'permanent (Standard/Eternal) character' that persists over time. Within the same game, the two offer different experiences, and rather than one being correct, the choice comes down to your playstyle. This guide lays out the differences and trade-offs so you can pick the path that fits you.
Seasonal Characters — Everyone on the Same Starting Line
The core appeal of a seasonal character is a 'fair fresh start.' When a season begins, every player starts together at level zero, so the economy resets and item prices form reasonably. For new and returning players, it is the moment when the gap with veterans is smallest, and because the whole community progresses at the same pace, information and companions are easy to find.
The new mechanics, themes, and rewards added each season are also best enjoyed on a seasonal character. Season-exclusive rewards and ranking competition give seasonal play extra motivation. When a season ends, though, that character moves to the permanent realm and steps out of 'active' play, so seasonal characters suit those who enjoy the loop of building a new character each season.
Permanent Characters — The Path of Accumulation and Stability
A permanent (Standard) character is unaffected by season resets. Since a character you build and the items you gather persist, it suits players who want to accumulate wealth over the long term and deeply complete a single character. In practice, Path of Exile moves characters and items to the Standard league — rather than deleting them — when a league ends, and Last Epoch transfers them to the Legacy realm when a cycle ends. Because every character from ended seasons pools here, the permanent realm is defined by long-accumulated powerful items and a rich economy. How often this flow repeats differs by game: the median cycle ARPG Seasons has tracked is about 98 days for PoE (41 leagues since 2013) and about 178 days for Last Epoch (5 cycles), so roughly at that interval a wave of season characters joins the permanent realm (many end dates are algorithmic estimates, so read these as approximate medians).
For a new player, however, the gap with existing players who already hold enormous wealth is large, and the fresh-start feeling of a new season is hard to get. The permanent realm is a stable choice for those who prefer 'accumulating at my own pace' over 'competition,' or who are too busy to keep up with every season. The table below compares the two options item by item.
| Aspect | Seasonal (league) character | Permanent (Standard) character |
|---|---|---|
| Starting line | Everyone starts fresh at level zero | Existing wealth kept |
| Economy | Reset, so prices are reasonable | Rich from long accumulation |
| New/returning access | Smallest gap — favorable | Large gap with veterans |
| Feel of new content | Season mechanic in full | Relatively limited |
| After season ends | Moves to permanent realm | Unaffected |
| Who it suits | Fans of repeated fresh starts and competition | Fans of accumulation and self-pacing |
How to Choose
There is no fixed answer. If you want to enjoy new content quickly and compete fairly, a seasonal character fits; if you want to build a single character slowly and accumulate wealth without time pressure, a permanent character fits. Many players run both: they enjoy the freshness on a seasonal character during the season, and after it ends they occasionally tend to the character that transferred to the permanent realm. The timeline below is one example of this combined rhythm.
In the end, this is not about picking seasonal or permanent forever. Run a seasonal character for one season and tend your permanent-realm character between seasons — the two realms connect naturally at each season's end. So the decision that actually matters is less 'which to choose' than 'when to start and when to hand off.' If you want to understand the season/league concept further, read the concept guide, and if server terms like Standard and Legacy are unfamiliar, see the glossary.
